SGN LTS Futures Project

September 16 @ 13:00 14:00

This Hydrogen Scotland member webinar on Monday, September 9th, is about the strategic LTS Futures project. Nancy Thomson of SGN will speak about the £30M Ofgem-funded LTS Futures project, which is supported by the Scottish and UK governments to recommission the mothballed 30-kilometre local gas transmission pipeline that runs from Grangemouth to Granton in Edinburgh.

LTS Futures is conducting a series of trials with hydrogen to prove the viability of repurposing existing local gas infrastructure for hydrogen use.
The LTS Futures Project forms part of the UK’s national hydrogen research programme to deliver a Net Zero decarbonisation solution for customers. The project seeks to research, develop, test and evidence the compatibility of the Local Transmission System Assets (LTS) assets, pipelines, associated plant and ancillary fittings, culminating in a ‘first of a kind’ repurposing trial and demonstration.

Nancy Thomson of SGN has over 16 years of experience in high-pressure onshore and offshore pipelines around the world, including an MSc in Pipeline Integrity Management. For the last four years, she has been leading the LTS Futures programme, which is investigating repurposing and uprating the GB high-pressure gas networks to hydrogen.

The aim of the LTS Futures project is to demonstrate that the Local Transmission System can be repurposed and potentially uprated to convey hydrogen. This would provide options for the decarbonisation of power, industry, heat, and transport by delivering a safe supply of energy to all customers both during and after the energy transition.

The current estimate is if the Local Transmission System is converted to transfer hydrogen then the cost of repurposing this LTS network will be between 15% and 30% of the costs of replacement, significantly reducing the costs of decarbonisation through the hydrogen pathway. The live trial between Grangemouth and Granton will give a much greater understanding of the actual cost and potential for repurposing and uprating the network and, in doing so, inform the whole system transformation costs.
