University of the Highlands and Islands
UHI supports research, innovation, and training across the hydrogen economy, UHI is well placed to play a key role in the progression of the hydrogen sector and is open to collaboration on new opportunities.
Teaching and Training:
- UHI’s Professional Development Award (PDA) Hydrogen: An Introduction for Technicians covers the safe handling of hydrogen gas, and the operation and design of the systems used to produce, store, transport, convert, and consume hydrogen as an alternative fuel in a range of renewable energy sectors.
- UHI Orkney Maritime Department has developed the world's first Government recognised training for crews of Hydrogen fuelled vessels.
- UHI is leading the TalEntEd Islands programme to fast track the decarbonization of Scottish islands. UHI Orkney will lead hydrogen, initially by developing a technician level Work-based Learning (WBL) provision across a wide variety of sectors to meet the expected increase in demand for skills related to installation, commissioning, maintenance and repair of hydrogen installations and technologies.
Hydrogen Test Centres:
- UHI in partnership with Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, and PlusZero Ltd on new Creed Hydrogen Skills and Innovation Centre (CHSIC), Outer Hebrides. This facility will create a commercially viable green hydrogen and oxygen production facility that can support the adoption of hydrogen application technology, provide a hands-on training and learning environment for UHI to deliver its Hydrogen Technician Training, and establish a facility to support field testing of new prototype electrolyser technology and allow early access to next generation equipment.
- Sustainable Aviation Test Environment (SATE2). is a collaboration between technology developers, end-users, airport operators, researchers and regulators. SATE aims to establish an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) hub-and-spoke delivery network and will conduct demonstration flights of technologies including a hydrogen-electric regional aircraft.
