Nominations and submissions for the 2024 Stewart Dow Memorial Award are open.
Stewart Dow was a champion for innovation with hydrogen and fuel cells and brought people together in a collaborative way to find solutions. Stewart tragically contracted COVID-19 and passed away in April 2020. Stewart spent many years working at BOC and supporting early start-ups to become well-known and successful organisations whilst driving the commercialisation of hydrogen fuel cells.
This is your opportunity to put forward nominations for an individual or group that has:
- Successfully increased the use of hydrogen fuel cells in new or existing applications or
- Brought people together in a collaborative way to find solutions and promote the use of hydrogen or fuel cells or
- Either developed practical solutions or an innovative product relating to the use of hydrogen or fuel cells.
Self-nominations are also welcome. Nominations and submissions close at 18:00 BST on Friday, 5th October 2024.
Stewart’s colleagues and friends in the hydrogen industry, together with his family, established this annual award in his memory. Past winners of the Stewart Dow Memorial Award include Fiona Landy of the Hydrogen Accelerator in 2020; Dr Robert Leah of Ceres Power in 2021; Mike Clarke of Interim Support Ltd in 2022; and Arlan Harris for his outreach work with the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Challenge in 2023.
The Stewart Dow Memorial Award recognises and encourages similar passion and enthusiasm for the development and deployment of hydrogen and fuel cells. This year, the award will include non-fuel cell applications while recognising Stewart’s passion for fuel cells and his approach to bringing people together collaboratively.
Nominations and submissions for the Award should provide evidence in one or more of the following areas:
- Contact details: name and contact details (email & phone) for the award nominee and proposer.
- Outline what has been achieved: this outline should be a maximum of 500 words and can include images.
- Application referees: Please also provide contact details (email and phone) for a referee (two referees if self-nominated) who has agreed to verify the nomination or provide additional insights into what has been achieved.

The Stewart Dow Memorial Award is supported jointly by the Hydrogen Energy Association and Hydrogen Scotland.
The 2024 Stewart Dow Memorial Award will be presented on the evening of Tuesday, October 29th, 2024, at the Hydrogen Scotland Conference 2024 in Glasgow. The Award will be presented jointly by the Hydrogen Energy Association, previously the UK Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Association (UKHFCA), and Hydrogen Scotland, previously the Scottish Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Association (SHFCA).
The 2024 Stewart Dow Award winner will also receive membership in the Hydrogen Energy Association and Hydrogen Scotland during the 2024/2025 period.
